It’s a New Year and Resolutions Abound – Why not choose HEALTH?

Nutrition is a choice.

In today’s society of fast foods it is very easy if not too easy to make unhealthy choices.  For these products to survive the desired shelf life they are infused with chemicals and preservatives. This makes them high in calories and low in nutritional value.

“While research continues, moderation remains important. Many beverages and other processed foods made with high-fructose corn syrup and other sweeteners are high in calories and low in nutritional value. Regularly including these products in your diet has the potential to promote obesity — which, in turn, promotes conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary artery disease.”  Mayo Clinic

Small changes in daily diet can make heartfelt changes in ones health.

Over the last 2 years over 700 advocacy groups with the backing of numerous nutritionists and professional chefs have been working to make changes to the US school lunch program.  These dedicated health focused advocates have worked on changes to the actual program as well as on creating school gardens and educational programs to increase parental awareness and knowledge.    A vocal supporter Jamie Oliver has begun to bring this to our local medias attention.  I find this very intriguing since Mr. Oliver lives in England.  More on Mr Oliver’s views and focus

Healthy Choices

Families can make healthy lunch choices together.

  1. An Apple a Day – yes it does keep the doctor away and the dentist too.  It may seem like a folk tale but apples are rich in fiber, naturally strengthen bones, lowers cholesterol and much more – 10 Health Benefits of Apples
  2. Peanuts, peanut butter and trail mix are great additions as well. High in protein and good oils they digest slowly to ensure long term energy.
  3. Broccoli, carrots or salad even in mini version brings goodness to the vegetable supported heart.
  4. Cottage cheese – another great protein to ensure long term energy.
  5. Crackers or a sandwich on whole wheat bread
  6. For dessert trail bar, granola, strawberries, grapes or a natural veggie based muffin.

Health and Nutrition is a choice.  Shouldn’t we make it valuable, conscious and healthy.

About Smoothie Essentials - ShelleRae

Welcome! I am ShelleRae and I am very excited you are here. I joined the Smoothie Essentials team about 5 years ago now. Always health conscious and into prevention versus medication it seemed natural when the opportunity came up to take on the creation of this blog and the MatchaGT blog as well. As mother to three and surrogate to many more I've practiced much of what I write on sometimes with great success and other times with a bit less. My friends and family are my test kitchen and my facts are most often from WebMD - they seem to have a fairly accurate and conservative approach. The Smoothie Essentials product is a line of boosts that add functionality to one's daily foods without adding flavor or colors. (except for MatchaGT and green blend) making it easy to "hide" them from the finicky eaters we all know and love. From stirring them into yogurts, smoothies, frappes and even juice drinks it all come out with the original flavor being center star.. My inspiration comes from others who also are striving to live a better life through lifestyle changes. More information is available at or by emailing
