Bloomberg reports on October 2nd that, “For the first time, the average amount of time it takes fired employees to find a new job exceeds the length of their standard unemployment benefits.” The report goes on to say the Labor Department results show: “The jobless rate rose to 9.8 percent in September, while payrolls fell by 263,000.”
On the other hand, the smoothie industry is still experiencing growth. At about the same time the Labor Department reflected the sad employment news, Erika Engle of the Star Bulletin reported that the Tropical Smoothie chain plans on opening “10 stores in Hawaii over the next four to five years, adding to the spread of the more than 275-unit chain across the U.S.”
The public demand for smoothies seems to defy the gravity of the economy. Not everyone has money for a new car or home, but some inexpensive entertainment with friends remains prominent.
Health and nutrition are keywords in the smoothie culture. But a recent article by Mark Newman of Temple News warns that, “Some smoothies pack more than just vitamins.” He reminds the readers that fruit smoothies are a great way to satisfy hunger pains and boost energy, but to be aware that many smoothie recipes include other things besides fruit. He states, “It’s OK to enjoy one of those monster-ccino drinks with whipped cream and syrup on top once in a while, but these calorie vampires shouldn’t be a regular routine.” His advice is to make sure that your smoothie actually contains adequate amounts of fruit, and the fresher the better.
