The Challenge of Upsell

An article in the September 26 edition of the Chicago Sun Times reports that, on the average, women earn about 80 cents to every dollar earned by men. Author Claudia Buck further details that it’s the women themselves being the problem because they tend to undervalue themselves ~ with many women undercutting their own earnings by not asking for a raise, not negotiating higher starting salary, and not increasing fees.

Compare that to what we see in the grocery stores and convenience stores. According to Markus A. Eckert, Ph.D. in his article of Sept 14 titled, Putting the Function in Beverages, “The call for value-added beverages containing vitamins, minerals, herbals, calcium, energy, protein, fiber and more continues to evolve as consumer needs change.” He goes on to state, “The functional beverage market continues to see a boost in volume sales, with a 74-percent increase during the past five years. The result has created challenges in terms of taste, mouthfeel and drinkability.”

Though still struggling to get their fair wages, the values of health and convenience still rank high. Whether for hydration, sports recovery or energy, shoppers are developing a preference towards beverages that are packed with vitamins, antioxidants, herbals and protein. The gist of Dr. Eckert’s article goes on to detail that the challenge remains on the producer as to how to combine as many ingredients and boosts as possible into the can without simultaneously adding bitter taste.

Perhaps the problem is the can itself. When bottling a beverage, it must meet the demand of many different consumers with many different tastes. Add to that, the problem of shelf life with a ready-to-drink bottle or can, and it’s easy to see why the beverage shelf at the local store keeps growing in size.

The benefit of a Smoothie Essentials Blend is that it comes in powder form and can be added to whichever drink an individual consumer prefers. Whether protein, herbals, vitamins or energy, a flavor change is not detected after adding the Smoothie Essential Blend of choice. A simple scoop of powder is all it takes ~ a smoothie bar can upsell their menu with the product line or the consumer can add a packet to their own beverage of choice ~ be it a juice, a smoothie, a shake, milk or even a bottle of purified water.

Bottoms and Bones

I found an excellent article written by Andrew Potter about high school students starting a smoothie shop.

At-Risk students at an alternative high school are learning how to research a business, write and execute a business plan, serve customers and do some accounting by operating a smoothie shop.

Calling it the Bottoms Up Smoothie Spot, or BUSS, they offer smoothies made from fruit, fruit juice and frozen yogurt. They sell for only $2, include five different flavors, ~ strawberry and banana being the most popular ~ and are apparently quite the popular beverage at the Marshalltown Learning Academy.

And best of all, it’s open to the public!
Try it out and post a comment here about your experience!

Meanwhile, conclusions on the connections between Depression and Bone Mineral Density were reported in Biological Psychiatry, in the journal of Sept 01, 2009.

Their findings portray depression as a significant risk factor for low BMD. Do you know someone who is suffering from depression? Economic times are taking a toll on many of us these days. Slip some Smoothie Essentials Calcium Blend to someone you care about.

Lady’s Choice

Women’s Blend

According to Reuters
Odwalla is introducing Pink Poetry Superfood which is “plum, dark sweet cherry, guava and other juices, along with hibiscus, cranberry, and green tea extracts. With the wellness of all women in mind, Odwalla introduces Pink Poetry Superfood, which not only tastes great but also contains antioxidant Vitamins C & E, as well as iron and calcium – two things often lacking in women`s diets.”

In the beverage industry, Odwalla is considered a ‘Ready to Drink” item, and according to the ingredients listed on the label, it is one of the better ones.

Health concious consumers are interested in functional beverages, and beverage bottlers like Odwalla appeal to that.

Smoothie Essentials Blends exceed the ‘Ready to Drink’ category in that our powdered Blends can be added to whatever beverage you already have, even if you’ve concocted your own at home.
